Stop, Drop, and Roll!

On my way home from the gym today I asked the kids what they wanted for lunch. They decided on grilled cheese sandwiches. When we got home I turned the stove on and got out a frypan and set it on the burner. I then ran downstairs to put something away and when I came back up the pan was on fire! Actually, whatever had spilled under the burner the night before from dinner was on fire. I am terrible in any stressful, think fast situation. I freak out and lose any coherent thought and never know what to do. Jonah just learned about fire safety at preschool and he comes in the kitchen as I'm trying to figure out what to do ( do I get the fire extinguisher? do I throw water on it? what do I do??) and yells "Fire! Mom- stop, drop and roll!" I start laughing as the flames grow bigger and finally get some sense and call Andy. I usher all the kids outside (then realize Baron is asleep in his crib) as Andy tells me to put a lid on it to smother the flames. I do that, only receiving a tiny burn on my thumb, and the fire is out in a matter of seconds. SO, the moral of the story is, don't ever come to me in a crisis situation, because I'll forget about one of your kids and they'll probably die, or I'll laugh and have no idea what to do :)

Quick thinking Jonah! You are lucky that it didn't get any worse. My mom burned all her kitchen cabinets...it worked out in her favor...she was gonna start remodeling the next week, so nothing of value was lost, just her dignity.

That would be so scary-- my house caught on fire when I was a kid and it was so tramatic.
